Regarding the Poppy

Considering I have less than a week left in the second trimester (*fist pump*), I should probably say something about this wee little sprite we call the Poppy. Let us cast our minds back many months, to last winter/early spring. I was putting laundry away and the thought came to me that there was a baby waiting to come. I knew it was a girl and I knew her name*. But the time wasn't right so she sat down on the bench to wait.

But when the time was right (or WAS it, considering we were getting ready to move? I need to plan the timing better...), she was too. We called her the Poppyseed because that was her size when we found out. I must confess I waffled a little bit on gender predictions, but I will also say the waffling didn't start until we thought of a really good boy name, ha. Her name was shortened to the Poppy once we knew she was a girl (high fives, Intuition), and she has been growing like a weed lo these many months.

So how is the second time around, you ask?  Well, in many ways it's an exact deja vu of last time.  Barfing, exhaustion, heartburn, general grossness, a serious lack of motivation, constant starvation, constant desire for mac and cheese. Everything except the heartburn let up around week 20, but there are always ups and downs.

What can I tell you about the Poppy?  Well, like the Speck she wants food all the time. She also moves all the time, all over. Up, down, this side, that side, in the back, up front.  All over. If the heartburn is any indication, she will be born looking like Rapunzel.  And that's the extent of my intuition.

The only other point of significance is that the placenta is really low, right on the edge of blocking the exit (so to speak).  So we've had two ultrasounds now, with a third scheduled to see if it's going to move (the doctor is hopeful). If it doesn't, it means another c-section, which is fine--I mean, healthy baby is the first priority, but it's kind of a bummer as I was planning on a VBAC. But it's out of my hands either way. So I will hope along with the doctor and watch the Poppy squirm all over for another ultrasound (all over).

So, that is the status of the Poppy!  She wiggles, she pokes, she tap dances, she looks like an alien from the outside.  Since we have less than three months to go (!), after the holidays there will be room painting and blanket making and projects galore!  That will be the fun part.  Mostly because I don't have to do the actual painting.

*It's Hepzibah. Of COURSE.

Wacky Six

Every month, when I write these posts about Boo Boo, I agonize over if it sounds braggy to go on and on about how awesome and skilled this baby is.  Now I have decided that is silly because he does things and I record them, whether they happen early, late or right on time.  And of course he just does things as he does them, not because he was given a detailed list of milestones and when to achieve them--he always loses it, no matter how many times I print it out!

And now, after that rambling disclaimer, let us get to the update!  Babycakes is six months old now, and he is more fun all the time.  He continues to do some things--always chewing, always grabbing, always chirping and squealing--and he's working on some new skills too.  He's pushing up on all fours and sometimes scooting backwards.  He's gotten better at rolling around outside his crib, rotates all around and goes from sitting to lying down.  Sometimes in the morning I find him in his crib all turned around at the other end, playing with his little stuffed fish.

He had his first taste of solids on his six month mark, and did not much care for eating the sweet potatoes but did enjoy mashing them.  We also tried out a sippy cup, and he got the hang of how to work it pretty quick--though he did not seem very impressed with the taste of water.

In this past month he gave up his last "night" feeding that used to happen between 5:30 and 6:00, and now really sleeps through the night from about 7:30 to 7:00.  Of course I still have to give him the binky/pull him out of the corner/roll him over in the night, but that's fine.  He also went to two longer naps because his three short naps were making me nuts, and he adjusted to that like a champ.  Truly, he is an amenable baby.

Recently he's started giving me what I like to call hugs and kisses.  In other words, he grabs onto me really tight, and then he will open his mouth super wide and put it on my face.  Perhaps he just wants to eat me, but I like calling them kisses.  Also he is MUCH better about stranger danger these days, just in time for Christmas!

We visited the doctor this month, where he got a clean bill of health, a final round of shots and a new set of stats.  Weight: 18.18 lbs (61%), height: 28 in. (92%), head: 17.3 in. (56%).  He went down a bit, percentile-wise, in height and weight, but he is growing well and I'm not concerned about it at all.

PICTURES.
Push ups!

This is how I find him after naps.  So excited to be awake!
Sometimes he gets in touch with his crafty side.  Collages, anyone?

Mmm, sweet potatoes.
One day he didn't want to take a nap and I was getting frustrated so I just put him in his bed and he immediately closed his eyes and went to sleep.  Then I felt bad.  And then I took this picture because he was so cute.

He MIGHT be outgrowing his jeans...

Overall, he continues to be a happy, energetic, good natured, wiggly, charming, squealy, roaring, funny baby.  Sometimes I miss that little stationary lump of a baby, but when he's this cute and this fun, it's hard to complain about anything.

Give Me Five Shillings

Once upon a time there was a little newborn baby named the Speck.

Five months later, he has grown into a pretty sizable baby named the Speck.

It is rather amazing how fast these little humans grow and change in just a few months.  He has gotten more smiley, more chatty, more mobile and more fun than ever!  I expect there will be more mores as he grows--more opinionated, more tantrum-y, more responsive, more conversational, more into dinosaurs.

This month saw the final victory over cradle cap, but the rise of a perpetually dry scalp.  We are still puzzling that one out, but I'm just glad the cradle cap is gone.

(He's really not as bald as he looks in this picture, I promise!)

Speaking of his head, well, you may have noticed his hair is not in quite such abundance these days.  It was hard for his hair to keep up with his head growth and the cradle cap didn't help.  It made me ever so sad.  But!  The times are changing and he has a lot of new hair growing in all over and that makes me ever so happy.  He also still has a good chunk of his baby hair down at the base of his head.  It doesn't look weird at ALL.

This month he also expanded his skill set to include rolling from back to tummy and sitting up!  He's also pushing up off his tummy.  There's some muscle under all that chubbiness!

He continues to not have teeth, nor any sign of teeth, but he also continues to chew on everything and drool constantly.

Sleep is still going pretty well, though with his rolling powers came more crying in the night to be rolled back.  He is getting better at not waking up though, hurrah for everyone.

No solids yet because I'm procrastinating, but he likes to watch us eat and tries to grab our food (as he does everything).  We started putting him in the Bumbo on the table at dinner, which he finds rather exciting.  (And of course we hold on to the Bumbo.)

The outdoors fascinate, the TV (that he rarely sees on) mesmerizes, the bath delights.  We read books, I make up games, he squeals and giggles, we play the piano, peek-a-boo is finally funny.  He sings in his crib when he wakes up in the morning.  He cries at other family members sometimes.  He cries at bedtime sometimes.  He cries for no reason sometimes.  But more often than not, he is happy and enjoying his little life.

Once upon a time, before he was born, I worried that I wouldn't like him or that he wouldn't be cute.

Silly me!

Doppelganger, pt. 2

Like father like son!  Or in this case, it was actually like son like father.  Either way, it's a good looking pair.

Can I just add that this month has included so many really cute pictures??  I don't know how much longer I can go before I just plaster the internet with all of them.  Brace yourself, internet!  You're about to get a whole lot cuter.

Four Leaf Baby

My scrumptious little Babycakes turned an illustrious four months old on Saturday.  He is getting more fun all the time (though I will confess to missing his tiny, fresh baby stage sometimes).  *sigh*

He also had his doctor's visit today, which confirmed the fact that he is growing like a weed and is very healthy.  It also confirmed the fact that he does not like shots.  But we learned from last time and gave him some medicine before the appointment and hopefully by keeping him dosed up the rest of the day we can avoid the evening meltdown this time.  Anyway, back to weed growing, he is currently 27 inches long (97%!), 16.27 lbs (76%) and his head percentile is 56%.  So he's about doubled his birth weight, and I think the only reason he doesn't look like a big ball of baby fat is because he is so long.

Here are some things he has been up to over the last month:

More Seven Peaks time!  Now that he's big enough for swim diapers, I think pool time is going to be even more fun.

Sleeping on his binky.  Ah, so comfy.

He loves to survey the land from atop my legs.

 Still loving his caterpillar friend.

 He's GENERALLY happy.

He does his best to squish his Pops.

 He wears out-of-season jammies...

...and does not approve.

He sits on his throne with his Sovereign's Orb.

He always sleeps at night in his crib and takes most of his naps there too, but I can't resist a snuggle nap sometimes...
...especially because it means I get to see expressions like this.  Hello, little old turtle face.

Step 1: Get something in hands.  Step 2: Put in mouth.  Step 3: Repeat.

Sometimes he and his wee-er cousin have the same outfits.  They also share an interest in the Sovereign's Orb.

Sometimes no one smiles for the camera.

Sometimes he folds himself in half AND eats my finger at the same time.

Here are just some cute pictures, no additional explanation necessary:

Other tidbits from this month: He puts everything in his mouth.  He had his first sniffles but was happy throughout.  He gets a bit overstimulated sometimes and doesn't always like to be held by anyone but me or Drew (it's flattering to me, but a bummer for other wannabe holders).  He giggles a lot, sometimes for no apparent reason.  He still really loves bath time (see also: giggling).  He grew out of size 1 diapers.  We started going to the baby storytime at the library and he enjoys it?  I dunno, he's there and that's about the extent of his reaction.  Over the last few weeks he has really settled into a routine of: three or four naps a day, asleep in bed by 8:00, dream feed around 11:00 and then waking up once around 4-5:00 to eat, then back asleep until 7:30 or so.  I can dig it, baby.

Anyway, the gist of this is that he is more fun all the time and is getting more aware of the world every day.  He recognizes things, chats and sings and is generally very happy most of the time.  Our battle with cradle cap continues and after a long hiatus, he started rolling again on Saturday.  Hey baby, you grow so good, baby.

Whew.  Well, that was a long update.  Maybe I should blog about him more than once a month??  Oh all right, if I insist.

(Yes!  I do.)

(Okay, one more.)

(Fine, two.)

(The end.)
