Confessions and/or Admissions

Today I was at a loss for a blog topic, and Ferskner was helpful enough to give me a suggestion. So today I'm going to admit to liking some things that I'm ashamed to like. Actually, let me correct myself: I'm not ashamed of anything that I like. So today I'm going to admit to liking some things that I'm not ashamed to like but perhaps should be.
  • Knee socks. I love knee socks. I mean the preppy kind, not the fancy kind kids these days are wearing. (Example from the mall last week: grey knee highs with multi-colored hearts, coupled with super-short gym shorts.)
  • "We are One" from the Lion King sequel. I just listened to that song about five times in a row.
  • Van Helsing. There are so many things to love about this movie I don't know why it's not more popular...except for all the obvious reasons.
  • Charlie and Lola. I haven't read any many of the books, but I love this show. It's so cute and English. "Cha-lie!"
  • "Leavin'" by Jesse McCartney. I KNOW.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean techno remixes.
  • Vienna sausages.
It was hard to think of this list because, to quote Marcue: "You like cool things. HP, Pirates, the Office. All cool." She also accused me of secretly liking Strutz, which, if true, would be cause for some serious shame on my part.

And now, gentle readers, I encourage you all to comment with your own lists so that I can mock read them.

  1. Do I really want to reveal such embarrassing secrets on an awesome blog where I know its readers will give me no end of grief? I don't think so! But since you were nice enough to quote me in your blog post, here goes. Just because I like you.

    1) I really do like the Love Comes Softly movie series. This is one of the very rare occasions where I like the movies much better than I do the books. But really, they're so fervent, honest, and unpretentious, how can you hate them? It's kind of like what you were telling me about the Mitford series the other day.

    2) I must confess that there are a few Backstreet Boys songs that are rather catchy.

    3) I really like Josh Groban. Even the foreign language stuff. Don't hate me!

    4) My mom and I bond over old television shows usually shown on KBYU: My Three Sons, Andy Griffith, Little House on the Prairie.

Why am I embarrassed about these? I blame it on our culture. Why is wholesomeness so looked down upon? What's wrong with being Molly? I'll make you a deal: if you don't laugh at me, I won't laugh at you. How's that?

  2. Oh, you and your Jane Eyre references. I liked your list, and I think We Are One is cool too (if only Kiara weren't that little tiny bit flat like she is...).

All right, then, here's my list:

o Boy bands (well, some of the boys bands stuff). Once I even went to a Backstreet Boys concert with a friend and her nieces and nephews. Don't judge me. It rocked.

o Weird Al. He's just a brilliant parodist, and can write pretty good songs of his own too.

o Random Disney music, such as that found in sequels or movie spin-off albums. Sometimes I hope people won't ask me what I'm listening to when I'm running because I'll be like... "The Little Mermaid: Splash Hits from the TV Series"....

Other than that, everything I like is cool and in no way embarrassing.

  3. Hmm, off the top of my head I can think of a couple things....

Gilmore Girls. Yep. Kate got me, not hooked, but enjoying the show. 90% of the stuff she watches makes me want to vomit (ABC Family and Disney Channel original movies, Hannah Montana, etc.), but Gilmore Girls is incredibly well-written, has very witty dialogue that covers many topics in interesting ways, and deep characters that I can care about. I can identify with Luke. I don't care who is dating who, but I enjoy the show.

Shakira. I can't often admit there are two or three old Shakira songs, in Spanish, pre-sellout songs, that are halfway decent and that I put in my iTunes playlists. I told Kate there are a couple songs that aren't bad, and now if we hear her on the radio she says, "Hey, Dan, it's your favorite singer!" No, that would be EmilĂana Torrini, of whom I am not embarrassed at all because she is incredible.

Great "admission", but unfortunately the thought of liking preppy knee socks is an "admission" rather than just a nice accent to an outfit / lifestyle. Anything so classic is likely to be back in fashion eventually, then fade out again... these things happen. Peter pan collars and crew neck sweaters with kilts or wool plaid shorts were the rage in the 60s-70s as a similar look was in the 30s-40s, with its earliest derivative in the teens 20s as flapper girls. Hope you wear them ofetn.

  5. I want to write my own post on this (shameless self promotion www.xanga.com/ferskner), but I full on understand the feeling that these things aren't something to be ashamed of. As I've tried to compile a list, most things are ironic. However, I often feel like I ought to not like Taco Bell as much as I do.
